Vitalik Buterin: Opposing the data center movement will not cause catastrophic consequences, and the slowdown in computing power growth is generally beneficial

Techub News According to reports, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin posted on the X platform stating that he does not agree with the strong emotional reactions against the anti-data center movement that emerged this week. He believes that algorithmic advancements mean that tasks requiring more and larger data centers in two years can be completed with existing data centers in four years (or possibly sooner). Therefore, even if the anti-data center movement achieves extreme success, it will not cause catastrophic consequences. He pointed out that the world needs as much time as possible to address the already apparent cybersecurity issues and the upcoming risks such as biological threats. The bottleneck for scientific applications lies more in factors beyond AI this, so slowing down AI development by one year hinders these applications far less than a year. Based on this, the slowdown in the ultra-fast growth of computing power is generally a good thing. He emphasized that this judgment does not require any controversial "doomsday" or RSI similar arguments. Even if it is generally harmful, its harm is far less than more than a dozen other political issues.
