Over the past year, the cryptocurrency market has shown a stark contrast to the U.S. stock market. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 indices have accumulated gains of 47% and 49% respectively over two years, while the Altcoin index has been mired in a downtrend. The crypto market is undergoing a structural shift where capital is concentrating towards quality assets.
The S&P 500 rose by 25% and 17.5% in 2024 and 2025 respectively, while the Nasdaq 100 gained 25.9% and 18.1% during the same period, with maximum drawdowns of only around 15%.
In contrast, the altcoin market saw the CoinDesk 80 Index (tracking 80 crypto assets outside the top 20) plummet by 46.4% in Q1 2025, with a year-to-date decline of 38% as of mid-July.
The MarketVector Digital Assets 100 Small-Cap Index even fell to its lowest point since November 2020 by the end of 2025, with the total crypto market capitalization evaporating over $1 trillion.
The core of this divergence is "return imbalance under high correlation." The CoinDesk 5 Index (tracking mainstream coins like Bitcoin) and the CoinDesk 80 Index have a correlation as high as 0.9, moving in sync but with vastly different returns. The former rose 12%-13% during the same period, while the latter fell nearly 40%.
The gap in risk-adjusted returns is even more pronounced. The Altcoin index exhibits volatility comparable to or even higher than U.S. stocks but records significant negative returns, resulting in a negative Sharpe ratio, whereas U.S. stock indices maintain consistently positive Sharpe ratios.
Over the past five years, the MarketVector Small-Cap Crypto Index delivered a return of -8%, while the large-cap crypto index surged 380% during the same period, clearly indicating institutional capital voting with its feet.
Kaiko data shows that although Altcoin trading volume has recovered to 2021 levels, 64% is concentrated in the top 10 Altcoins. "Institutional-grade" assets with clearer regulatory outlooks, such as Solana and XRP, have become the few winners.
Capital is not exiting the crypto market but is flowing upwards along the quality curve, with Bitcoin and Ethereum spot ETFs continuously attracting institutional participation.
For investors, diversifying into Altcoins has now lost its meaning. The near 0.9 correlation between the CoinDesk 5 and CoinDesk 80 indices means holding Altcoins does not provide diversification benefits but instead entails additional risk.
The volatility of the "Altcoin Season" index, which plummeted from 88 to 16 by the end of 2024, further confirms its nature as a tactical trading vehicle rather than a long-term allocation asset.
The current market logic has fundamentally shifted: capital no longer favors niche Altcoins but instead focuses on high-quality targets with clear regulations and ample liquidity.
Bitcoin and Ethereum have gained institutional recognition through ETFs, while U.S. stocks attract capital with stable returns. Together, they are squeezing the生存空间 (living space) of inferior Altcoins.
