Techub News reported, according to Bloomberg, the European Parliament passed an amendment on Tuesday supporting the issuance of a digital euro with both online and offline functionality. This stance diverges from the position of the project's lead legislative rapporteur, who previously supported only an offline version. The parliament's statement indicated that the digital euro is crucial for "strengthening the EU's monetary sovereignty, reducing fragmentation in retail payments, and preserving the integrity and resilience of the single market." If the digitalization of payments is entirely led by private and non-EU entities, it could expose users and merchants to new risks of exclusion. According to the legislative process, the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee will vote on the proposal in early May. If the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament can reach an agreement next year, the European Central Bank may launch a pilot for the digital euro in 2027 and officially introduce it in 2029.
Techub News reports, according to CoinDesk, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde stated at a press conference that the ECB has completed the technical and preparatory work for the digital euro, and it is now up to political institutions to take action. Lagarde pointed out that the digital euro is a strategic priority for Europe's financial future. She said: "Our goal is to ensure that in the digital age, there is a currency that can serve as an anchor for the stability of the financial system." The ECB also called on EU institutions to act swiftly to pass regulations related to the digital euro. The digital euro is expected to be launched in the second half of 2026, a timeline consistent with other euro-backed stablecoin plans regulated by Europe's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA).
Techub News: According to Reuters, EU finance ministers met with European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde and EU Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis, reaching an agreement on the roadmap for launching a digital euro. An attendee stated that the European Central Bank will also submit a holding limit proposal for approval by the Council of European Finance Ministers. Although the European Commission proposed digital euro legislation in June 2023, the European Parliament and the European Council have not yet completed the approval process. The European Council plans to complete its deliberations by the end of the year. Additionally, the European Central Bank hopes the legislation will be finalized by June next year, after which it will take approximately two and a half to three years to officially launch the digital euro.
