Techub News reported that Mizuho Financial Group, Nomura Holdings, Japan Securities Clearing Corporation (JSCC), and Digital Asset announced they will jointly launch a proof-of-concept experiment for blockchain-based digital collateral management of Japanese Government Bonds (JGBs). This project was selected for Japan's Financial Services Agency's "Payment Innovation Project (PIP)" in February 2026, aiming to enhance collateral management efficiency using the Canton Network, which is specifically designed for financial institutions.
The core of the experiment is to verify whether blockchain technology can enable seamless transfer of rights and real-time ledger updates within a multi-tiered account structure without altering the legal nature of JGBs. Through system integration, the project plans to achieve 24/7 real-time cross-border collateral transactions, thereby significantly reducing operational costs for financial institutions and enhancing the global competitiveness of Japan's financial market. Previously, the Canton Network successfully completed a real-time reuse test of U.S. Treasuries as digital collateral by the end of 2025.
