Techub News reported, according to CHEK News, a Canadian resident first received a scam text message in late 2025, which lured them into depositing CAD 5,000 via a cryptocurrency ATM to participate in a "work-from-home buying and selling stocks cryptocurrency" job opportunity, resulting in the loss of the funds. Earlier this year, the resident saw a fake Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) public service announcement online. After clicking the link and filling out a form, a person claiming to be a lawyer from the Toronto-based Helprpc law firm called, falsely stating that two crypto wallets under the victim's name containing approximately $60,000 in "proceeds" had been seized, and proactively offered recovery services. After becoming suspicious and verifying, the victim found that the lawyer was not registered with the Law Society of British Columbia or the Law Society of Ontario. Police confirmed that the website provided by the caller was inaccessible. This case highlights the common secondary scam tactic in crypto fraud, which exploits victims' eagerness to recover losses to carry out further fraud.
