Coinbase-incubated, AI-focused payment protocol x402 launches V2 version

Techub News reported, according to The Block, x402, an open-source payment protocol incubated by Coinbase and designed for AI agents, has launched its V2 version approximately six months after its initial release.

The most significant upgrade in the V2 version is the unification of x402's payment interface. The x402 V2 standardizes the identification methods for networks and assets within the protocol, "creating a single payment format that can be universally applied across different blockchains and traditional payment systems." This means x402 will "support multi-chain by default," enabling support for native tokens of other blockchains like Base or Solana without requiring custom logic. Furthermore, the system is also compatible with "traditional payment systems" such as ACH and card networks. The updated system also introduces a dynamic "payTo" routing function, which can support payment processes like usage-based billing, subscriptions, prepaid payments, and multi-step transactions. Developers can also inject "lifecycle hooks" for conditional tools or metric monitoring, and create more customized payment walls.
