Techub News reported, according to Fortune, U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Treasury's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) on Friday, requesting an update on the latest status of the two independent monitors responsible for overseeing Binance's compliance operations. Blumenthal expressed deep concern over alleged serious anti-money laundering (AML) deficiencies at Binance. Previous reports indicated that approximately $1.7 billion in crypto funds allegedly flowed through the exchange to wallets linked to Iran, and there were reports that Binance dismissed internal investigators who had alerted executives to such illicit fund flows.
As part of the $4.3 billion settlement in 2023, these two monitors, reporting to the DOJ and FinCEN respectively, officially began their duties in 2024. In his letter, Blumenthal inquired whether the monitors had submitted any reports of violations and questioned whether the external oversight was still being effectively enforced. He expressed concern that following reports in 2025 about the DOJ pausing parts of its corporate monitor program, the oversight of Binance may have become ineffective. Currently, Binance denies that the dismissals were related to the investigation findings and insists its compliance system is rigorous.
