Ethereum Co-Founder: Improvements in 3-SAT Algorithm Might Break Hash Preimages

Techub News reports that @dankrad tweeted that hash-based encryption cannot avoid this risk: if improvements in the subexponential 3-SAT algorithm can be effective on real-scale instances, then it is very likely that they can also be used to find preimages of hash functions. The analysis he cited states that new advances in elliptic curve discrete logarithms only make the group structure usable when the curve size is extremely large; this scale far exceeds the curves currently in practical use, so the current impact on existing curves is zero.
