Techub News reports that the privacy protocol Umbra has shut down its official front-end website, aiming to prevent hackers from using the protocol to transfer stolen funds from recent security attacks. Umbra officials stated that approximately $800,000 in illicit funds have been transferred through its protocol. However, because the protocol was designed to protect the identity of the recipient rather than the sender, the transfer paths of all involved funds can still be tracked and identified.
This action comes just days after the Kelp protocol suffered a major attack (losses exceeding $280 million), with reports indicating that attackers are attempting to bridge funds from the Ethereum network to Bitcoin through protocols like Umbra. Currently, Umbra has placed its hosted front-end into maintenance mode and stated that it will be restored only after confirming it will not interfere with ongoing asset recovery efforts. However, Umbra officials also emphasized that, due to the decentralized nature of smart contracts, this decision cannot prevent anyone from operating by directly calling the contract or using the open-source front-end of the self-hosted version.
