U.S. Treasury Sanctions Iran Oil Shipping Network Involving Cryptocurrency Payment Channels

Techub News reports, citing CryptoBriefing, that the U.S. Treasury Department announced on May 7 the imposition of sanctions on 13 vessels and 8 entities for their involvement in Iran's oil transportation network to China. The department stated that relevant parties may use cryptocurrencies (particularly USDT) to circumvent international sanctions, and that Iran has mined over 10,000 bitcoins since 2019 for cross-border payments. According to reports, Iranian and Chinese companies have recently been exploring the use of decentralized finance platforms for oil trade settlement. Following the announcement of the sanctions, the price of Bitcoin fell by approximately 2% the next day. Analysts noted that such sanctions could accelerate institutional demand for blockchain analytics and compliance tools.
