Techub News reports that ARK Invest and Unchained have jointly released the "Bitcoin and Quantum Computing" whitepaper. The whitepaper indicates that approximately 34.6% of the Bitcoin supply remains exposed to the long-term risk of a quantum computing breakthrough, while 65.4% of the supply is currently relatively safe. The at-risk assets include about 5 million Bitcoins that are migratable due to address reuse, 1.7 million Bitcoins held in early P2PK addresses, and 200,000 P2TR address assets.
The report states that while quantum computing poses a long-term risk, Bitcoin requires a soft-fork upgrade by integrating post-quantum cryptography (PQC) standards such as ML-DSA or SLH-DSA. Additionally, the BIP-360 proposal under discussion suggests introducing a Pay-to-Merkle-Root output type to mitigate key path vulnerabilities in Taproot. ARK estimates that quantum computers may not be capable of cracking the first public key until the mid-2030s.
